Frequently asked questions

Attached you will find some frequently asked questions and answers regarding the flights to, from and in Africa.

What is the maximum weight for luggage when I fly to Africa?

Each airline has its own maximum weight for the amount of luggage. From Europe it is usually 23 kg for Economy Class and 30 kg in Business Class.

What does the '2 piece concept' of KLM and partners mean?

The amount of luggage you can take for free is determined by the number of pieces or weight.  You can find this on your paper ticket under the box that says 'allow'. On your e-ticket you can find this in the box 'baggage'.

If the permitted weight in kilos in the box 'allow' or 'baggage' is on your ticket, then your luggage falls under the weight concept. In which case you may take one large piece of luggage with a maximum weight of 20 kg for Economy Class and 30 kg for Business Class.

Does it say PC in the box 'allow' or 'baggage' on your ticket? Then your baggage falls under the piece concept (2 piece concept).  You may bring 2 pieces of luggage with each piece weighing of 23 kg for Economy Class and 32 kg for Business Class. Restriction for size or dimensions is 158 cm maximum (l + w + h). This can be especially helpful for travellers who want to take stuff from the Netherlands to donate in Africa.

NOTICE! The '2 piece concept' (or 2PC) doesn't apply to all flights. Ask our travel consultants for more information.

What is the maximum weight for luggage during local (charter) flights in Africa?

Each airline has its own maximum weight for the amount of luggage. For flights with smaller types of aircraft, it is usually 15 kg maximum.
Ask our travel consultants about the restrictions for specific flights.

Is it true that I can't take a hard suitcase on a safari?

Whenever your trip is a domestic flight with a local airline you may not take a hard case, but your luggage should be in, for example, a soft case or a backpack. This is because small aircrafts are flown. Hard cases are difficult to stow in small planes.

Which airline is the safest?

Compared to other modes of travel, flying is statistically the safest. All international airlines meet international safety regulations as prescribed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It is not true that one international airline is safer than another.

Which major airlines fly to destinations in Africa?

KLM flies direct from Amsterdam to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Arusha (Kilimanjaro).
Kenya Airlines flies direct from London and Amsterdam to Nairobi, and direct from London to Mombasa.
British Airways flies direct from London to Nairobi and several destinations in Southern Africa.

How many times a week do flights depart Africa?

Most flights depart daily to Eastern and Southern Africa, some airlines even fly several times a day.

Can I check-in online?

With KLM you can check-in online from 30 hours before departure. You choose your seat and print your boarding pass (at home, office, etc.). You save time at the airport (no queues at the check-in desks).
