Look, look, but don't buy

Look, look, but don't buy

The World Wide Fund for Nature takes action against such souvenirs.

Travelling in Africa means meeting people, experiencing other cultures and enjoying an impressive nature. Africa is a savannah, with wide plains and safaris. It is the habitat of many exotic animals such as gorillas, elephants, rhinos and lions. Even lesser-known plants and animals such as the cycads (fern) palm, monitor lizards and numerous species of snakes have a home here.  But Africa is more, with its tropical rain forests, colourful deserts, snowy mountains, tropical beaches and an underwater world that shows a wealth of marine life. Experiences that you will never forget.

Many people like to take something tangible home, as a reminder of how beautiful it was. Dutch tourists are known to just look, but are not so fast to buy. The traders in souvenirs don't like that, but for nature, this cautious stance is often harmless.  This is so, because some of the souvenirs are made from endangered plants and animals. If we continue to buy them, looking and enjoying natures beauty from your travel destinations will quickly come to an end.

Save yourself the trouble

By being aware of what you shouldn't buy at your travel destinations, not only does it save nature but it also saves you the trouble.   In many cases it is not allowed for nature souvenirs to enter in the Netherlands. Each year many travellers returning back to the Netherlands must hand in their souvenirs to customs. On top of that, one can be fined and in some cases even imprisoned.
