Driving in Africa

Driving in Africa

To ensure that your trip runs smoothly, you will find attached a number of guidelines for driving in Africa.

If you make a self-drive tour, you are less likely to have trouble. The tour operators know the area and customs inside out, so that no unnecessary risks are taken.

In many countries, especially in remote areas, the roads are often poorly maintained and it is not uncommon to come across herds of sheep or cows.  Always be alert, always wear your seat belt and avoid driving long distances at night.

Park your car (if possible) on a well-lit and populated place. Always lock your car. Do not leave valuables visible in your car.

South Africa has a good infrastructure and the roads are generally of good quality. But the South African drivers are known as reckless speed demons, keep this in mind.

Remember that distances are great in Africa. Therefore, you should drive in intervals and stop regularly to stretch out the legs.

The best advice for safe travel is: just be aware of your surroundings.  If you observe, you will have the greatest chance of a trouble free trip.
