 Malaria

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by malaria parasites transferred by a mosquito bite.  If you travel to a malaria area, you must take some precautions:

For the protection against malaria, it is recommended to get anti-malaria remedies. It is advisable to get a personal vaccination and for malaria advice,  contact your GP or the Health Service.

Protect exposed body parts (face, hands and ankles) with insect repellents. Diethyltoluamide (DEET) are most effective. There are several brand names that can be found in outdoor stores.

Wear covered (light) clothing once the sun goes down (long sleeves, long pants, shoes and socks).

Use a mosquito net as the room has no air conditioning.  In most of these lodges, a mosquito net is available.

 Other diseases

Besides malaria, there are several diseases that are transmitted by insects, such as Dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever) and trypanosomiasis (Tsetse fly). Ticks can also transmit diseases such as tick fever and Lyme disease. These disorders are less common, but as a precaution you should wear clothing that covers all parts of the body well and use insect repellent.

BMS-Travellers  do recommend you to get advice on a personal vaccination (Hepatitis A and B, Yellow Fever, Tetanus, Typhoid and Rabies), contact your doctor, your local medical and health services.

 Food and Drinks

In countries where drinking water is not carefully controlled, it is wise to use bottled water. For people with a sensitive stomach: Mind your teeth and the ice cubes in soft drinks!
If you buy a bottle of water locally:  Make sure it has not been previously opened.

In almost all of the accommodation, food is adapted to Western standards. You do not need to be worried about it.

Use common sense when eating: if you're not familiar with it, leave it alone.
