Vaccinations needed for Africa

To ensure a visit to Africa is unforgettable for all the right reasons, advanced planning and careful consideration of health and safety precautions are essential. This planning must include a consultation with a medical professional, preferably one specializing in travel medicine.

These medical professionals have up-to-date information about essential and recommended vaccinations to all destinations. The risk of contracting diseases varies with the duration of your trip and intended activities. This is why you must discuss your specific plans with a medical professional.

Routine vaccinations

It is important to make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date before travelling anywhere in Africa. These include measles, influenza, chickenpox, polio, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus). While these diseases may not worry you at home or even in Europe, for example, the risk and prevalence of these diseases are considerably higher in Africa. If you are not up to date, get these vaccinations before you travel.

Essential vaccinations

Four vaccinations are recommended for all countries in Africa: yellow fever, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid. There is a high risk of hepatitis A in every African country, a high risk for hepatitis B in sub-Saharan Africa and a high-to-intermediate risk of hepatitis B in North Africa. You must get all four vaccinations before departure.

Other vaccinations

Other vaccinations may be recommended by your medical professional depending on your destination(s) and intended activities.

Malaria recommendations

There is a significant risk of malaria in most parts of Africa south of the Sahara and appropriate preventive medicines are essential for visitors to this area. Adequate measures to avoid mosquito bites, such as nets and creams, are also essential. For more information, please contact your medical professional.
