Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is located on the boarder with Tanzania, it's a totally different area like the breezy cultivated hills that distinguish much of Rwanda. The landscape is dominated by a maze of marshes and lakes that follow the winding stream of the Akagera River (the most distant water well of the Nile), and the typical African savannah landscape of acacia woodland interspersed with open grassland.

Akagera is primarily an area for large wildlife. Large herds of elephants and buffaloes emerge from the forests to drink at the lakes, while if your lucky, you can even encounter a leopard, a spotted hyena or a lion. Giraffes and zebras roam the savannah together with more than a dozen species of antelope such as impala, the small slender oribi, bushbuck, tsessebe and the largest antelope in the world, the statuesque Cape Eland.

A stay by the lakes of Akagera is an ultimate introduction to the African bush. Large number of hippos grunting and splashing the entire day whilst large crocodiles warm themselves in the sun, gapping with their impressive jaws. The skies are filled with a duet or a few fish eagles, which in this way, show they are the kings of the sky. Alongside and on the water live large concentrations of water birds, whilst in the intermediate marshes, special birds seek refuge such as, the generuk, the shoe bill heron, perhaps the most sought out bird of all.
