Kakamega Forest National Reserve

Kakamega is the only remaining tropical rainforest in western Kenya. For all those who enjoy walking, this area is recommended, offering its forest flora and fauna.

The scale and grandeur of this dense rainforest with trees, some more than 100 years old, are very impressive.  Birdwatchers and biologists will find this forest a paradise. The forest has 160 different types of trees, 360 bird species, many insects and amphibians and about 40% of Kenya's butterfly population.

The best way to get overwhelmed by this rainforest is by having a walk. Walking beneath the lush canopy, one can enjoy beautiful colours, exotic bird sounds and the smell of wood, flowers and moss.  Under guidance of local guides, you can walk different routes in Kakamega. The walk to Buyango Hill, the highest point of the forest, is a must, for visitors of this rainforest.
