Samburu National Park
This park, located on about five hours drive north of Nairobi, forms a unit with Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserve. They all lie along the river Ewaso Nyiro. In the north the landscape is dry and the savannah is interrupted by low mountain slopes.
This area is home to the Samburu, a nomadic people that is related to the Masai. If the opportunity arises, you can visit Samburu and learn about their lifestyle. Even for the Samburu people it is difficult to survive here. The area around the banks of the River Ewaso Nyiro (Samburu name for "brown water") is greener and here you'll find many different bird species.
The reserve is famous for a number of species that can hardly be found elsewhere, such as the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx and the giraffe gazelle. In the northern part, where the river flows through rocky hills and a narrow plain, many leopards live. You can also spot over 400 species of birds including the Somali ostrich (with the blue neck).
