Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is the second oldest (and second deepest) lake in the world, located in Central Africa, which forms the border between Tanzania, Burundi, Congo and Zambia. It stretches about 673 km north-south in direction and averages 50 km wide.

The lake was first discovered by Europeans in 1858, when the explorers Richard Burton and John Speke were seeking the source of the Nile River. Speke then continued the search on and found the actual source, Lake Victoria. The lake is an important source of food for the local people of the surrounding countries.

There are two national parks bordering the lake: Mahale Mountains National Park and Gombe Stream National Park. These are the only two places in Tanzania where it is possible to see chimpanzees in the wild.

The shores of Lake Tanganyika and Lupita Island offer a very relaxing end of a safari in Tanzania. You will find many beautiful beaches where you can relax and swim among the thousands of different fish that live here. The water sports are very diverse, from sailing, water skiing and windsurfing to snorkelling and even diving. There is also the possibility of different boat trips.
