Liwonde National Park

The Liwonde National Park is fairly small in comparison to the rest of Malawi’s Wildlife parks, but is a very popular park to visit.

Wildlife includes large numbers of elephants, buffalo, hippos and crocodiles as well as kudu, sable and bushbuck. Predators include leopards (not frequently seen) and hyena. It also has an impressive variety of birds.
Game viewing is enhanced because the Shire River flows along its western border, allowing boat safaris as well as the usual ones on foot or in 4x4s.

Liwonde has been very active in conservation efforts and animal relocation programs. Since 1990, elephants, black rhinoceros, elands, impalas, kudu, sables, warthogs, waterbuck, and zebra have been relocated to or from the park. Recently 4 cheetahs are relocated from South Africa.
