Inhambane
The old colonial city of Inhambane is worth a visit. Since 1534, the Portuguese had a permanent trading post here. This makes Inhambane one of the oldest cities in Southern Africa.
The 170 year old 'Cathedral of our Lady of Conception', lies in the old part of town, where you can climb to a point at the top, by means of a rustic ladder, where after, you have a magnificent view over the city and harbour. Furthermore, the city as a noteworthy museum. In the local market on the boulevard, simply named, 'Mercado Central', is the local food trade, including a colourful assortment of spices, fish, shrimp and cashew nuts.
Behind the peninsula lies a lagoon across the town of Maxixe, which you can visit with a dhow (local sailboat). From Inhambane, you can also do excursions to the islands of Ratos and Parcos.
The main attraction here are the beautiful coastline, the beaches and the back country. The best known places are Praia do Tofo, Praia dos Cocos, Ponto do Barra, Ila de Benquerra and Guinjata Bay. Diving is very popular here, especially in the locations of Manta Reef and Gallaria. Large manta rays, whale sharks, turtles and other aquatic life are regularly seen.
