North Luangwa National Park
This park is one of the most spectacular surviving wilderness areas in Africa and is now one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in the world.
Two major rivers, deLufila and Mwaleshi, flow through and along the park. The latter flows down into a series of rapids and waterfalls and before reaching the valley it forms the beautiful Chomba waterfall. This cool crystal clear waterfall, located in the heart of the North Luangwa Park has some of the largest herds of antelope along its riverbanks.
The variety of habitats in this park is incredible. There are areas with only mopane forests, lush riparian forests and trees on which many sausage-like fruits dangle. This leads to a breathtaking variety of birds.
For years the northern part was a poor extension of the South Luangwa National Park, but this has now changed, thanks to the presence of the well-known researchers and writers Mark and Delia Owens. Thanks to their efforts, the number of poachers are greatly reduced. The park now has some of the most diligent rangers in the world.
The park is known for its vast herds of buffalo and large flocks of lions. It is not unusual to witness a 'kill'. If you're a traveller looking for adventure rather than a standard safari, North Luangwa National Park is the place to be.
