Coastal Area

On the coast of Tanzania you will find a few small lodges, situated on beautiful pristine beaches. The coast on the mainland is less known than the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba or Mafia, which is mostly a beach destination after a safari is booked.

From Dar es Salaam, the lodges are easily reached, although, the roads are not all in the best conditional shape.
Besides Dar es Salaam, if your in the area, there are some nice places that are worth a visit:

Bagamoyo

In two hours' drive above Dar Es Salaam lies Bagamoyo, once home to explorer David Livingstone. In these historic surroundings you will find yourself really in the past...There is much to see what refers to the glorious past of the city: the slave trade. The oldest house in Bagamoyo was built in 1860. The fort was used by the Arabs and the Germans up until 1870 and was later - around 1992 - used as a police post. Originally, the slaves were held before they were brought by boat to Zanzibar. The fort has an underground passage, through which slaves were moved like cattle to the dhows (Arab sailing boats).

Pangani

Pangani is a small place about 55 kilometres from Tanga. Pangani was once a place where many slaves and ivory were exported, while it was one of the largest ports between Bagamoyo and Mombasa in Kenya. Today, Pangani is a quiet town. Great to relax or do a boat trip along the river or to one of the nearby islands. In and around the Pangani river live many different types of birds, crocodiles and hippos.
