Udzungwa Mountains National Park

The Udzungwa Mountains, encapsulated by a fascinating rainforest, were left untouched for thousands of years, partly because of traditional superstition.

The height of the mountains ranges from 200 to about 2600 meters. The park is visited by many travellers, but is a must for travellers who go to the south of Tanzania. This area has long been isolated from the rest of East Africa, such that in the last 5 million years many species have evolved into endemic species. Several new species have even been discovered recently (including the Udzungwa partridge in 1991).

There is no permanent accommodation in the park, but it's only an hour's drive from Mikumi, from which you can make a day trip to Udzungwa. Bring a pair of solid walking boots, because the hike to the Sanje waterfall is not a "detour". A stunning and breathtaking views of this unique spot is the ultimate reward for those who make this trip!

There are no roads in the park, but there are many hiking trails, varying in length and difficulty, to explore this unspoiled rainforest with its many rivers...
