Nairobi
Nairobi is a beautiful and open city with many trees, parks and grand boulevards. It is the capital of Kenya. The city lies on its namesake river in the south of the country. The name Nairobi comes from the Masai Ewaso Nyirobi that means cool waters.
In Nairobi lies the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport International Airport, the largest airport in East and Central Africa. In 2006 it processed 4.4 million passengers. KLM, Kenya Airways and British Airways are some of the airlines which land here.
National Museum
Here you can learn about the wildlife, culture and history of Kenya and mankind. You do not need to spend hours here, but the paintings and animal galleries are beautiful. You will get an insight into the life of man in antiquity and much information about the current population of Kenya and their struggle for independence. Upstairs you should definitely not skip the paintings of Joy Adamson.
Karen Blixen museum
For those familiar with the film and the author of "Out of Africa". It gives some idea of the time when Karen Blixen lived. Some ornaments of the film are displayed in the garden. Blixen's name still lives in Kenya and certainly in this environment.
Shopping
The city has an ultra modern shopping centre, which focuses on the affluent Western audience. You can find clothes, bags and more in all categories.
Additionally you may also shop at one of the local markets of Nairobi, for example in Westlands. There are many stalls that together form a large market. The merchandise includes, among others, African art, carvings, African baskets, jewellery and much more African homemade products. Negotiating the price is more than recommended.
