Mana Pools National Park
Mana Pools is part of the downstream of the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. After each rainy season the sludge-formed area transforms into huge lakes.
When these lakes gradually dry up and shrink, the area attracts many large animals (including elephants, buffalo, leopards and cheetahs) in search for water.
The word mana means four in the Shona language. This refers to the four large permanent lakes in this part of the Zambezi. The largest lake, Long Pool, houses large numbers of crocodiles and hippos and along the shores you will find large herds of elephants.
The park offers breathtaking views, and large concentrations of wildlife come to drink from the miles-long banks. It is also a popular area for walking safaris and bird-watchers, who enjoy the more than 300 different bird species.
The best way to explore Mana Pools is certainly by canoe. These multi-day canoe safaris, interspersed with walking safaris, are possible all year round. In the dry season you can take a 4x4 safari.
