Limpopo

The northern part of Kruger National Park lies in Limpopo Province (formerly known as North Province). The nearest airport is located near Phalaborwa, a place known for its open copper mine, the largest in Africa.

To the south are the Waterbergen, an area that is rich in streams, springs, marshes and abundant bird life. The steep cliffs and the impressive rock formations of the southern slopes of the Waterberg deliver outstanding mountain sport opportunities. To the north, you reach the Soutpansbergen, "Salt Pan Mountain," with their impressive blue hills overgrown with forest. At the foot of the hills lies the picturesque town Machado (Louis Trichardt) in one of the prettiest parts of the country.

There also lives diverse ethnic groups of people in the province with their own rich culture. The Venda, who inhabit the eastern part of the Soutpansbergen, are very superstitious and believe strongly in rites and rituals. The Northern Sotho live in communities throughout the Limpopo Province. The famous Rain Queen Modadji still continue to live in this area. In the centre lies the bustling capital, Polokwane (Pietersburg) - the industrial and commercial heart of the Great Limpopo.
