Lake Mburo National Park

Situated in an extensive acacia woodland in southern Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park has a large biodiversity and is a bird paradise within easy reach of Kampala.

The park protects 68 mammal species including the rare roan antelope and topi, and is the best place to see the giant moose. Jackals, leopards and hyenas hunt here on the large number of grass eaters.

During a boat trip on Lake Mburo you can see crocodiles, hippos, pelicans, Black Crake and, with some luck, Shoe Bill. The park is home to 310 bird species in the forests and papyrus marshes, grasslands and open water.

The legend of Lake Mburo

Long ago lived the two brothers Kigarama and Mburo in a large valley. Kigarama dreamed one night that they were in danger. The next morning he told his dream to Mburo and urged a speedy departure from the valley. Mburo ignored his brother, so Kigarama went on his own to the hills. The valley flooded and Mburo drowned. The lake is named after Mburo and the hills to his brother Kigarama.
