Mafia Island
Mafia is a large island lying off the most southern coast of Tanzania. It is about 20 km long and 8 km wide. A perfect destination for a luxury vacation, honeymoon or a short break filled with sun, sea, water sports and relaxation.
It is a quiet, untouched island where time seems to stand still and where the life of the inhabitants are hardly affected by the outside world. The beaches are narrower and interrupted by mangrove forests.
Mafia is the perfect place for people who want to experience how Zanzibar looked like 35 years ago. The island itself seems more mainland of Tanzania than Zanzibar and Pemba, with dense forests and coconut and cashew nut plantations. The whole coastline is generally covered with palm trees, but the island doesn't have much sandy beaches as to Zanzibar.
For people who want to discover things, meet local people and who want to submerge into the Swahili culture, Mafia Island is the pronounced paradise...
Underwater World
The beautiful underwater world of Mafia is a true diver's paradise. There are six large, well-known dive sites but also countless smaller sites that can be counted among the best dive sites of East Africa. These reefs are populated by beautiful and diverse marine life (about 50 species of coral and 400 species of fish).
On almost all dive sites, you do not have to go deeper than 30 meters for a great dive. Underwater visibility varies with the tides, but is mostly good. Please note that you will regularly dive with currents.
