Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia. Is located in south-central Zambia (an area where several tribes live together) on a plateau at 1,280 meters in altitude.

Lusaka was founded in 1905 by European settlers and they named the place after a local chieftain. Due to its central place in the country and conveniently located along the railway, it replaced Livingstone as the capital of the British colony of Northern Rhodesia in 1935. In 1964 it became the capital of the recently independent  Zambia.

As the capital Lusaka was a sound infrastructure and the city attracts not only Zambians, but also many travellers. West of the so-called Cairo Road, the nearly 2 km long main avenue of the city, came the New City Market, Soweto Market and the Kamwala Market, which forms a large shopping area.

Tourist events in the capital include the Statue of Liberty, the National Museum, the Moore plant pots, the cathedral of the Holy Cross and the Botanical Gardens. The district, Northmead, is famous for the joys of 'Lusaka by Night'. Kabulonga, Northmead and Woodlands shops are teeming with imported products from Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Manda Hill is the first real 'shopping mall' and lures shoppers, and Kabwata is the workers district. There is a Kabwata Cultural Village there, a bustling center of traditional activities and souvenirs.
