Mahé

The main island of Mahé stretches over 28 kilometres in length and 8 km in width and has more than seventy beaches.

Inland is abundant with dense rainforest, where you can have unforgettable walks. Mahe is the crown jewel of this archipelago, it is such a perfect place that the colour is a jade green all year round. The interior is surrounded by white sand beaches and crystal clear water that turns dark blue above the coral reefs. In a pristine corner of the beach is Anse Louis Mahe, a secret place with a transparent turquoise sea and soft white sand.

Mahé is the largest and most populated (72,000 inhabitants) island of the Seychelles. The area is 154.7  km², located in the northeast of the state. The capital of Seychelles, Victoria, is also on this island.

Mahé was first visited by the British in 1609. It was not until 1742, when the expedition of Lazare Picault, that the Europeans arrived here again. Mahé remained French until 1814, when it became a British colony. It remained a colony until Seychelles became independent in 1976. The island got its name in 1774. It is named after the French admiral and governor of Mauritius, Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais (1699-1753).

The highest point of the island is Morne Seychellois at a 905 meters, it is also the highest point of the archipelago. The Morne Seychelloi is located in the Morne Seychellois National Park. The north and east of Mahé are the most populated, and here lies the international airport, which opened in 1971. In the south and west are the Baie Ternay Marine National Park and the Port Launay Marine National Park. The Sainte-Anne Marine National Park is just off the coast of Mahé, just like Conception, Thérèse, Anonyme en Silhouette.

Victoria

Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, is a nice little town to have a leisure walk through. The atmosphere is pleasant and you will really feel you've stumbled on a tropical paradise. Victoria has an old section with narrow streets and dilapidated buildings, and a new section with wide avenues and tropical gardens. Sightseeing in Victoria include the clock tower, modelled after the Little Ben in London, next to the courthouse, but two real cathedrals (one Anglican and one Roman), though the seminary, Capuchin House, is actually better. Furthermore, there are several museums, and the Sir Selwyn Clarke Market, where in the morning, the stalls are fully loaded with tropical fruits, spices and fresh fish.
