Caprivi

The Caprivi is a long 'pan handle' permanently surrounded by water. The area stretches out eastward from the Kavango River to and along Zambezi, to the point of four countries, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The green savanna is bordered by the Kwando, Linyanti and Chobe rivers to the southern border of Botswana and by the Zambezi river which forms a part of the northern border with Zambia.

The Caprivi is the wettest region in Namibia with its many rainfalls and a number of major rivers such as the Okavango, Kwando and Zambezi; all are from Angola and provide a vast area of water. There are also smaller rivers such as the Linyanti and Chobe.
The abundance of water in the Caprivi provides a wide variety of mammals and birds species. Especially, large herds of elephants can be found here, which, owing to the dense vegetation, it is not easily seen. Wildlife is protected in a number of reserves. There are no fences here, so animals roam freely across the borders of the neighbouring countries, Botswana and Zambia.

Mahango Game Park

The Mahango Game Park is separated from the Caprivi by the Okavango River. The park is only accessible with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. You will find many species of endangered animals, such as the roan antelope, but also lions, elephants, leopards, hippos, buffaloes and sable antelopes.

The Popa Falls near Mahango is a beautiful oasis. Although this name suggests that it is a waterfall, in reality it is more a series of rapids with a maximum height of four meters. You can enjoy swimming, relaxing in the shade of trees or canoeing.

Bwabwata National Park

In the Bwabwata National Park, you will encounter much wildlife, such as elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes and buffaloes. The park is also home to many birds; there are 339 species presently seen. One of the highlights is a cruise on the Kavango or the Kwando river, whereby from the water, you can view the life of animals on the banks.

Mudumu National Park

Mudumu National Park is a vast area of 1,010 km² with the Kwando River as the western border. The area is green and has swamps, riparian forests, dense savannah and mopane forests. You get a real Africa sensation here: it is wild, rugged and there are few other visitors.

Nkasa Rupara National Park

The park (former Mamili National Park) lies between the Kwando- and Linyanti river. This swampy and often difficult to reach park has heavenly waterways, but large parts of the area are easily reachable throughout the year by 4x4 or by foot. Many animals can be found here, such as elephants, lions, buffaloes, lechwe, antelopes, giraffes, crocodiles and hippos. Over 400 different types of birds were spotted here.
