Etosha National Park

Etosha is known as one of the worlds finest wildlife reserves. It once measured 100,000 square kilometres, but even now, it has a very impressive 23,175 square kilometres.

It is a haven for ninety-three different mammals and three hundred forty bird species. In the middle of the park is the Etosha Pan, a flat salt marsh, 130 km long and 50 km wide. Geologists believe that the salt pan itself started more than 12 million years ago as a shallow lake that resulted in the Kunene River. Due to the fact of climate changes, there is now a short period of water in the pan per year, thus, attracting flamingos and pelicans to swarm there. Here, from mid March to November you will find an enormous amount of game and poultry.

Etosha is known for its native impala species and the largest elephants of Africa. You will also find there the rare black rhino. Despite the massive size of Etosha, only the south side of the pan is accessible for visitors. There are three rest camps in the park:  Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni. An extensive network of roads connects camping sites with more than thirty waterholes in the central and eastern parts. They are ideal places for wildlife spotting.
