Ngamba Island

A visit to Ngamba Island brings you to a beautiful wooded island in Lake Victoria. This island is a sanctuary in Uganda for orphaned chimpanzees and chimpanzees which were rescued from zoos, circuses and even the cooking pot!

Ngamba Island Chimp Sanctuary was founded in 1998 in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Trust. The reserve provides a home for over 30 chimpanzees. The chimps are now free to roam about their island, except for a small protected area reserved for staff and visitors.

Ngamba Island is one big playground for the chimps with a tangle of vines and towering trees where they can live freely without threat from the outside world. Because chimps do not like water, the lake forms a natural boundary.

A visit to Ngamba Island offers you the opportunity to see the chimps during feeding time from an elevated walkway where you can take good pictures.

Forest Walk

EA more exciting option is a guided walk ('Forest Walk') within the enclosure of the chimp area. During the Forest Walk up to three visitors at the same time can enter the park (two times a day, morning and afternoon) under the guidance of an experienced guide.

CAUTION! You can only participate in the Forest Walk under certain conditions.
