Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park is probably the most popular park in Uganda. The park was established in 1952, making it one of the three oldest parks in Uganda covering an area of 1978 km².
The park is situated along the equator in the western Rift Valley of south-western Uganda, near the Rwenzori Mountains and bordering the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). QENP is divided by the famous Kazinga Channel into two parts (the northern and southern part). Each part has different ecosystems, each with its own unique appeal.
The park can be visited all year round. QENP is a UNESCO (1979) protected reserve, a major bird reserve. QENP has 568 of Uganda's 1017 species of birds (more than one quarter of all bird species in Africa), more than any other park in Africa! QENP has a bird observatory for research on migration.
