Riyadh

The capital Riyadh is at first glance a modern metropolis, its highways hives of activity amongst urban high-rises. But delve beneath its shiny new façade and the city’s fascinating centuries-old history can still be found within its atmospheric souqs, compelling museums and ancient architecture.

This mix of medieval and millennial makes for a captivating combination, where you can discover both the earliest roots of Arabia and the modern culture of the capital.

The Saudi National Museum has more than 3,700 antiquities on display, documenting Arabia's grand history over millennia. Another place to visit: Al Masmak Fort. Built in 1865 and superbly preserved, the fortress houses a collection of photographs charting the evolution of the city over the years.

The Souq Al Zal is filled with the smell of incense and the noise of merry street vendors. Everything from gold coins to quirky handicrafts and dusty antiques can be found here, with traditional Saudi items such as dallah coffee pots, jambiya daggers and mabkhara incense burners; all excellent souvenirs.

Perhaps the best way to experience Riyadh's cultural fusion is through the cuisine. You must try authentic recipes such as kabsa, jareesh and hashi. But there are also many restaurants serving fusion dishes inspired by the country's regions, putting a modern twist on traditional Saudi favourites.
