Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is a small town along the coast, entirely in South African style, situated between the desert with sand dunes and the Atlantic Ocean with its unique desolate coastline.

American whalers discovered this deep bay, the only natural port of Namibia. Its strategic location halfway between the Namibian coastline, with direct access to principal shipping routes, the British and later the South Africans started using this bay as a commercial port.

Located just outside Walvis Bay lies Dune 7, the highest sand dune in the area. It is a challenge for anyone to climb meters high dune. Once at the top, you have a breathtaking view over the area. You will also find the special desert plant Welwitschia Mirabilis here, which can reach up to 2000 years of age.

Walvis Bay Lagoon is one of the major attractions of Walvis Bay. The surroundings of the beautiful natural lagoon is protected and you will find a large number of birds including flamingos, pelicans, the gannet and penguins, which, depending on the season, remain there. The natural beauty of water, the peace and quiet, and the thousands of flamingos that gather on the fertile wetlands ... it's well worth it.

During a cruise of a half-day with a small boat you visit the harbour, Bird Island and Pelican Point. En route you can enjoy dolphins which swim alongside the boat. The fur seals as well like to pay a visit to the boats, where a snack awaits them.
