Mauritius South
The south of Mauritius starts in the most western part at Le Morne Brabant, an imposing mountain towering 550 meters above the lagoon, and stretches to Mahébourg near the international airport.
In Gris-Gris, the most southern point of the island, the onslaught of the waves onto the rocks provide a fascinating spectacle. This part of the island, with its lush nature, cliffs, small bays and predominantly black population, is very different from the rest of Mauritius.
Along the south-western coast lies the bay of Bel Ombre where you will find only a handful hotels built along the white sandy beach which is protected by a reef. Apart from diving and snorkelling, surfing is also a popular water sport in this area.
On the old colonial sugar plantation of Bel Ombre an exclusive 18-hole golf course is being developed and a large part of the estate has been converted into the Valriche nature reserve, where you can undertake excursions with a quad bike, jeep or take various walks to enjoy the stunning fauna and flora.
