South Luangwa National Park

Experts have called the South Luangwa National Park one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in the world and that is not without reason...

Few parks can match the extraordinary amount of wildlife nor can they show such remarkable wildlife in this remote and isolated wilderness to visitors. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River is among the best in Africa and the Luangwa River, the lifeline of the park, is the best preserved river in Africa.

This huge area of pure wilderness is home to a large amount of wildlife and birds, including the larger predators. The only exception is the rhino, who unfortunately got extinct because of poaching in the area.
There are 60 different animal species and 400 bird species.

The survival of the valley depends on the winding Luangwa River, which is filled with hippos, crocodiles and moorhens. When you cross the bridge to the park there are usually between 30 and 70 hippos lounging down in the river. It is estimated that there are at least 50 hippos per mile in the Luangwa River...

It is fantastic to go bird watching in the valley. By the end of the dry season, when the water level in the rivers and lagoons begins to drop, hundreds of large water birds come wading in the shallow water. One of the most beautiful birds is the elegant crane with its golden crest, which congregate in large flocks at the salt pans.

If you are interested in trees and plants, you can indulge in the varied vegetation in the park. You will find some beautiful trees such as mopane, Leadwood and winter thorn. In addition, there are several rare species such as baobab, large ebony trees, the long edible ivory palm, marula and the impressive tamarind.
