Kafue National Park

This park is located in central western Zambia, similar in size of Wales in Great Brittan, and is twice as large as the Yellowstone National Park in America. It is the largest park in Zambia and one of the largest in the world.

The park is located in three provinces of Zambia and has an impressive range of over 400 bird species and an abundant wildlife, where the only large absentee is the giraffe.

The Kafue River and its tributaries feed this varied landscape of waving grasslands and forests. A great part of the park is wooded with occasional pieces of open grassland, also known as 'dambos', where the antelopes go to graze. This is interrupted by termite mounds, fig trees and palm trees. Predators such as, leopards and lions occur in this area.

A dominant attraction in the park is the Busanga Plains - a vast marsh fed by the Lufupa River. This marsh has been known in the dry season to almost disappear, which hippos are often trapped in shallow pools. The Kafwala divides the river channels causing foaming rapids.  The river comes back together and flows further south of Itezhi-tezhi, where a dam was constructed to form a huge lake.

Roads are often very poor in Zambia and the roads in and around the park are no exception. Some are impassable, even with a 4-wheel drive...
