Waterberg Plateau National Park

The Waterberg Plateau is an exceptional location, 200 meters above the plains of the Kalahari in eastern Namibia. Due to the high position, the greater rainfall and dense tropical vegetation it stands in sharp contrast to the other parks. Because of the permeability of the rock the base of the plateau is green and lush, while the top is dry.

In the '70s Waterberg was an area where several endangered species were placed for which relocation programs were established. The black rhino was reintroduced thanks to one of these programs in 1989 in Damaraland.

Waterberg is the site of one of the most important turning points in the history of Namibia. In the early 20th century, the Herero lost their last and greatest battle against the German colonial forces at the foot of the Waterberg Plateau. The Herero were thus forced to leave the area and head eastward to British Bechuanaland (now Botswana). Many perished during the fierce and unequal battle against their oppressors, or in the Kalahari desert due to lack of food and water.

Today Waterberg is a popular national park. There live about 25 species of mammals, including endangered species such as the sable antelope and the white and black rhino. Also, wild dogs, wildebeest, buffalo, divers, baboons, klipspringers, leopards, cheetahs and more than 200 bird species call this place home.

You can see and experience this abundant wildlife close up during the offered game drives. It is also possible to explore or to climb the plateau through the many walking trails.
